FAQs

You can use our product to finish your 4½ inch diameter column.

Installation would be slightly different, however. Instead of mounting our cap and base trim over the outside of our Wrap, you would cut the Wrap length 2¼ inches shorter (height of cap and base together) and mount the cap and base above and below your Wrapped column. Note the inside diameter of our specified size 4 inch cap and base set is actually 4½ inches to accommodate the thickness of our Wrap. Just be sure to make your cross-cut for the Wrap length exactly perpendicular so it meets the cap and base evenly.

The oak models you will need for each column are as follows.

85168 (96 x 16 inch Oak Wrap)
85CB40 (4 inch size Oak Cap & Base has 4½ inch actual inside diameter)
Pole-Wrap can also be used as an attractive wall covering for flat surfaces. Use it to accent a single wall in a room for a dramatic effect, or as a wainscoting on all walls. Our Wrap product is especially well suited for irregular surfaces like a curved bar front or the flat front pictured here in the photo. Pole-Wrap is available in 4 x 8 foot sheets which is the most economical size for wall applications. Simply cut sections as needed and butt them together as you would regular wood wall paneling. The seams will be undetectable. Install sections one at a time with any name brand construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails Paneling Formula). Micro pin finishing nails can be used to hold the sections in place while the adhesive is setting.

The excessive heat from a steam or heating pipe might damage Pole-Wrap if some type of insulation or heat shield isn't installed first. Also, you need to consider that this pipe may provide heat to maintain a comfortable room temperature. If so, you can build a heat shield around the visible portion of the pipe leaving the backside exposed for heat radiation. You would then cover the heat shield with Pole-Wrap.
Yes, Pole-Wrap has become very popular for furniture restoration and resurfacing. You can find plenty of creative DIY videos for this application on TikTok and Pinterest.
Pole-Wrap is easily cut to size using both a utility knife and fine tooth saw blade for wood. Cut vertically by running the utility knife between the grooves. Cut horizontally with a hand saw, or by rolling up the product and cutting with a chop saw.
Yes, Pole-Wrap is now available in a half-round profile with 11/16 inch wide panels that are 1/4 inch tall. Our half-round profile is available in 47 and 94 inch lengths for both Red Oak and MDF.
Any name brand general purpose construction adhesive will work well. Liquid Nails makes a special “Projects" formula for paneling and mouldings which is ideal.
Pole-Wrap is available in Home Depot Canada for purchase online and delivery to you home or local Home Depot store in Canada. Order online through https://www.homedepot.ca.
Pole-Wrap can be used for outdoor applications. But, like any other wood product, you must first carefully caulk around the edges and apply an oil based primer. You can then use either oil based or latex paint for your finishing coat(s). Be sure to use all exterior grade products to adequately protect the wood from weather. If you prefer a clear finish to show off the rich wood grain, use clear caulking and simply apply a couple coats of an oil based polyurethane or marine varnish.
Lally posts or lally columns are a concrete filled column that is commonly used as a support member in buildings. These columns are always a tubular shaped column and made up of a steel wall.

We recently came across this wonderful historic ad featuring Genuine Lally Columns for Sale in 1922. More commonly referred to as the "basement pole", this ingenious product was invented by John Lally way back in the late 1800s. Today, this structural support column is still preferred among home builders for its ease of job site installation, fireproof, load bearing and space saving advantages.

Don't try to "eyeball" the diameter of your column. Measure the circumference around your column with a tape measure or string. Use this measurement to cross reference and find your column's diameter (see third paragraph). The three standard column diameters for residential basements are 3 in., 3.5 in. and 4 in. Always choose your Pole-Wrap models based on this initial circumference measurement used to find your column diameter.

Note: you will not need to choose a larger diameter Cap & Base or Drink Shelf model to accommodate the thickness of our Wrap. These models are already sized to fit over the Wrap after it's applied. In other words, the "actual" inside diameters of these models are one half inch greater than the specified size on the box (i.e., our 4 in. size is actually cut to a 4.5 in. diameter).

Choose your Wrap model based on this circumference measurement as well. For example, if you have 4 in. diameter column (approx. 12.5 in. circum.) you would need to purchase a 16 in. wide Wrap model. Choose a 12 in. wide Wrap model for 3 in. diameter (9.5" circum.) and 3.5 in. diameter (11 in. circum.) columns.

Note: The length and width of our Wraps must be cut down to exactly fit your specific column.
If you plan on using a short nap carpet, like a Berber, then have the carpet laid before you install the Wrap. Then, glue the Base directly on top of the carpet using construction adhesive. If you are using a taller nap carpet (over ¼"), then we recommend that you cut away the carpet under the Base and glue (using construction adhesive) small scrap wood supports between the floor and bottom of the Base. This way the Base is visible and not buried in the carpet.
You can purchase a 4 ft. Wrap Extension along with our standard 8 ft. Wrap for basements applications having over 8 tall ceilings. The Pole-Wrap Extension is currently available on homedepot.com.  The Pole-Wrap Extension can be installed with our Drink Shelf to cover the joining seam.

Pole-Wrap® is available in premium unfinished red oak, light maple, cherry and MDF for easy paint finishing. See our Where to Buy page for availability.
All Pole-Wrap products are unfinished natural hardwood or MDF. The hardwoods are easily finished with two coats of polyurethane, but can also be stained or painted to match your decor exactly. Our MDF products should be primed with an oil, alcohol or lacquer based primer before applying a paint finish which can be latex if you choose. If you are going to color paint our hardwood products, any quality brand primer, water based latex, oil based or otherwise, will perform well.
You can paint Pole-Wrap either before of after installation. If painting before, be sure not to apply paint too thickly in the v-grooves as this may cause the dried paint to crack along these flex points.
Yes, Pole-Wrap is flexible paneling. Our 16 inch wide Wrap models are the right size for this standard 4x4 post application. If you require crown and/or base trim, this can be easily made from straight moulding of your choice available at your local lumber store. Use a miter box to make 45 degree cuts and frame the floor and ceiling around your Pole-Wrap post. Attach this trim with construction adhesive or finishing nails. Surface finish with paint, stain or just two coats of clear polyurethane to match your decor.
Installation is no different, but if you have a jack post with a protruding pin, then you should consider replacing this temporary support with a jack post support that has a screw adjustment instead of a pin. These are relatively inexpensive. Akron Products has a good product line available at Lowe’s. Visit http://www.akronproducts.com/ for more information. The Home Depot carries the Tiger brand available through special order. The other solution is to build a cylinder housing around your temporary jack post using 4 inch diameter PVC pipe. Cut in half lengthwise and reassemble around your jack post and fasten with construction adhesive. Install Pole-Wrap over the cylinder housing with our 4 inch size Cap & Base set.
